Hello and welcome to Episode 74 of Coexisting With Nonhuman Animals Pigs with iPads

I've got a lot of newspaper stories to cover this episode, I've tried to throw in a bunch of audio clips in between, so you wont fall asleep listening to me drone on and on. To those who listen to Coexisting With Nonhuman Animals as a sleep aid, sorry, you'll be kept awake this episode for a change!

I recently recorded a video of my lovely Hen Friends, "Wonderful World", Hens enjoying themselves in the warm sun, backed by the TOTALLY free to use song "What a Wonderful World" by Louis Armstrong.

I hope gentle videos of other animals as they should be can be a positive force for Veganism, I've gotten a few positive comments already:

I wonder how young children who see other animals living peacefully will feel growing up, if decent exposure to such things will stay with them all their lives. I know that once I was sick, in bed as a young boy, and my family brought in some newly hatched chicks, presumably so they would catch my flu, and thus create the dreaded Bird Flu, you know, I never knew until now my parents actively wanted to bring about armageddon, you learn something new every day, I'll never forget those chirping chicks on my brightly covered duvet, and thanks to photos taken, I never will.

Hello and welcome to episode 72 of Coexisting With Nonhuman Animals, your favourite show from the bottom of New Zealand.

In the latest news about priceless New Zealand waterways being messed up big time by high quality quote "dairy nutrients", we have this lovely story about a local polluter, from The Press, a Christchurch newspaper:

"The deliberate pollution of a Canterbury waterway with tens of thousands of litres of effluent will jeopardise a multi-million dollar plan to clean up Lake Ellesmere.

Canterbury farm manager Blair John Lloyd narrowly avoided home detention after causing one of the region's largest ever illegal effluent discharges.

Instead, Lloyd was fined $20,000 and sentenced to 260 hours of community service when he appeared in the Christchurch District Court in November after allowing more than 44,000 litres of effluent to discharge from a Springston property into a waterway flowing into the environmentally-sensitive Lake Ellesmere.

Appalled Ngai Tahu (the main local tribe of native Maori New Zealanders) chairman Mark Solomon said the pollution had jeopardised an $11.6 million plan to clean up the lake. (Thats around 10 million USD.)

"Government, industry and Ngai Tahu are pumping a huge amount of time and resource into reversing the degradation of Te Waihora [Lake Ellesmere], and if we don't succeed, the consequences will be considerable."

Solomon said the lake's condition was the result of 150 years of poor farming and development practice in the area, which was no longer acceptable.

Federated Farmers North Canterbury dairy chairman Kieran Stone said news of the discharge was "hugely disappointing".

"You'd like to think that everyone would have upped their game and this sort of thing wouldn't happen. It's not too flash."

In what was slammed by Judge Paul Kellar as "very deliberate" offending, Lloyd disconnected a pipe from a blocked irrigator and placed it under nearby trees, allowing diluted effluent to spill over into nearby drains.

More than 44,000 litres of diluted effluent was discharged over four days in October 2010 before Environment Canterbury (ECan) staff noticed the discharge."

To put "more than 44,000 litres of diluted effluent" into perspective, diluted with water no doubt, taking clean, fresh water, quite possibly from one of the Canterbury regions fossil water reservoirs, the water that accumulated over hundreds, thousands of years, and here they are pumping it out of the ground and using this precious water to water down cowshit, so they can claim their pollution is "diluted", 44,000 litres….ok, I drink a fair amount of water a day, about 1 to 2 litres….so, if Jordan drinks two litres of water each day, thats about one five thousandth of the amount of watered down shit this farmer negligently pumped out each day. And the thing about water is, it tends to be naturally recycled, so every time Jordan fills his waterbottle, guess what used to be in that water? That water came from a river, a river that stretches far out into rural Southland, by the way, I'm just trying to accentuate my accent on R sounds, water, river, rural, all these lovely farmers dumping "dairy effluent", "diluted" or not, it goes into our water, gee, thanks farmers!

Like the yearly event "townies" accurately predict called "Winter", which always seems to have farmers caught without preparations, leaving staving baby animals to die in the paddocks, pollution is a nonstop problem. I took a screenshot of a farmer saying how he would flout the new rules placed upon him, how he was meant to move the sewage hoses each day, to spread the "nutrient" around, he couldn't be bothered, so he'd just move them when he felt like it. Its simply a fact of farming life, nice animals go in, huge tones of "dairy nutrients" come out, tens of millions of animals are killed each year in this country alone, and stolen calf food is sold for a quick profit, regardless of the cost to everyone else where, or, Lake Ellesmere.

An interesting video showed up early in the new year a Killer Whale or Orca beating the hell out of sharks, the sharks beaching themselves in an attempt to get free from the whale, all this happened about an hours drive from where I live, so, I guess the list of dangerous animals found on land here in New Zealand expands from just that bloody spider from Australia, to including Sharks. Snakes on a Plane, meet Sharks ON the Beach! A video of a family recording the thrashing in the breaking waves, the sharks coming up onto the sand and getting stuck, whirling about while a dog trained to hurt and kill Pigs growls and snaps at the larger shark can be found in my shownotes.

Comment to The Southland Times RE rodeos and Non Veganism

Theres recently been a few articles about a local "rodeo", where innocent young animals are thrown about, or "ridden" in a display of fear and pain, showing how very "strong" and "dominating" we are to other "lesser" animals.

The Southland Times had a poll online, which I posted on my Facebook page, asking for votes *against* and to use the comments as an example to promote Veganism instead, it started off being nearly 50/50, but after my friends reposted it to their friends, we ended up with well over 80 percent against rodeos.

I'm glad that we're moving to a world where people can question our current practices, what we do to other animals, and am taking this as a great opportunity to promote Animal Rights, to add a third option of "I'm Vegan, lets not harm and kill other animals, its the least they deserve!".

An opinion piece was written by the newspaper after we displayed our dominance over the poll, which you can read online here:

"OPINION: Are rodeos a guilty pleasure?

That's really two questions. Are they pleasure and, if so, a guilty one?

It depends on how inclined you are to think like an analytical behaviourist, emote like an empathetic ethologist, fret like a liberal or reckon like a redneck.

A behaviourist accepts only the result of tests and isn't likely to be all that impressed by wailing exhortations to "look into the animal's eyes and see the anguish".

He would observe, dispassionately, that the flank strap elastic band is put around a horses' midriff to encourage it to buck – and that it keeps bucking once the rider is off.

The ethologist might substitute the word "encourage" with "torment" and would be open to wider questions about whether animals can feel not only physical pain but emotional distress.

The behaviourist might note that the animal injury rate reported from rodeos is less than 1 per cent and record the cowboy contention that the most use a bucking horse would get each year would total something like 64 seconds, if the riders were able to stay on that long. He might note some bruising, such as might also be observed at children's sports events.

(To the reproach that children, unlike animals, would be taking part voluntarily and would be free to express how they really feel, the behaviourist might have to defer to the liberal, who would retort that if you looked into the eyes of some of the parents on the sidelines, you'd conclude that such freedom is illusory.)"

I wrote in this letter, taking up two whole comments:

"Political affiliation doesnt come into it, you could be a money kissing ACT-er or an environmentally friendly Green-ie, the issue is about harming other animals. "Keep politics out of sport" was the warcry decades past, but issues such as human rights and animal rights (animal rights *are* human rights, we other animals) transcend wanting to play some little game of "sport".

I've attended local "rodeos" before, and its pretty plain to see the distress and fear, as the other animals are being thrown about into the dirt. A festival of treating other animals as things (indeed, as they are described as "its" rather than "he" or "she" here), we can do so much better in 2012.

Quote:

"We are entitled to have mixed feelings about rodeos. Some among us just want to feel the adrenaline. Some just want the rest of us to cut it out and leave animals alone, period.

Most, surely, see a capacious middle ground that affords room for manoeuvre, giving rodeo a future based on appropriate controls on behaviours to be fairly expected of man and beast."

We most certainly cannot find a middle [way], either we are for harming and killing someone, or we are fully against it. How would you "nicely" throw other animals about? Drug them up so they feel nothing but "happy thoughts"? A rink lined with cotton wool? (the best kind of wool!) Soundproof glass around the braying and inebriated mob? Even after the construction of this hypothetical hundred million dollar stadium in Te Anau, we'd still be left with the issue of seeing other animals as mere playthings, to be "dominated" in a public display of humiliation.

As the English Sociologist Dr Roger Yates might say, its a matter of societal norms, what we see as normal, and what we participate in ourselves. If we grew up believing it were ok to harm cats and dogs, we would do so, while mocking "[fretting] liberals", "wailing exhortations to "look into the animal's eyes and see the anguish".

We have grown up otherwise, where we currently have a demand from mainstream New Zealand for "harsher penalties" on those who harm animals (as in Cats and Dogs), with some being so enthusiastic as to wish for a "death penalty" to those who would hurt a cat or dog!

Might these same people attend rodeos? Quite possibly.

Yesterday I drove past four Southland slaughterhouses with a friend. We live in a province where you'll find vet clinics next door to "meat warehouses"

where only a two lane national highway separates the community swimming pool and a gigantic slaughterhouse, and where we celebrate "Cardigan Bay", "the worlds first million dollar pacer", a horse forced into dragging around a little Napoleon, for the "athlete" (the human!) to receive glory, for the "owners" to receive exorbitant profits.

Right behind the sign is a slaughterhouse, aptly demonstrating the link between the two industries, exploiting animals for our "sport", of exploiting other animals weakness to stainless steel and violence, for our dinner plate.

God willing, this will be the last episode of Coexisting With Nonhuman Animals, I don't think I'll have any more time to record random episodes, on the six last days of existence, before 2012 gets us.

I'll make a promise, its not like I'm going to have to back it up, ha, IF New Zealand is somehow just out of range of the Asteroids, and the Godzillas, and the Nuclear Meltdowns in the Non Nuclear Free countries, and the swarms of hornets, tsunamis of untreated "dairy nutrient", and general pestilence, I promise (yeah right) to continue the show, so long as the studio (a computer and secondhand USB headset microphone and myself are in fact intact.

Neil, Michael Collins who kept the orbiter in a handbrake turn going round and round the big rock, and Buzz Aldrin. What a beautiful message, of using German designed rockets, and a "whose got the biggest dick" measuring contest to see who would be first to race into space.

The plaque used a little known font called Futura, also designed by the Germans, you may remember it from such Vegan Society logos as INVSOC's, the Invercargill Vegan Society. Myself excluded, I wouldn't have it any other way, most of us were born outside glorious Invercargill, they first set foot upon the city to promote peace for all the animal kingdom.

I actually recited part of Neil Armstrongs famous speech on landing in Auckland, New Zealand for the National Animal Rights Conference this year, on the 20th of July (in New Zealand time), 2011. Yes, I know, so those couple guys actually would have landed on the 21st going by New Zealand time, but whatever, the date is remembered as the 20th, so I picked the 20th to fly up to Auckland, New Zealands largest city, on the North Island. As I recited over the Boeing 737 lunar landers jet engines

I took an average of a hundred photos/videos each day I was in Auckland. What I said, unheard over that pesky atmosphere and Auckland Airport noise, I should have asked the pilot to land the large plane on a barren, dusty surface, I'm sure they'd be cool with that, "20th of July 2011, one small step for a man, one giant leap for Invercargill kind". Or something like that, my memory is as fuzzy as the recording is loud. Evidently, recording on your iPhone 4 is not quite as clear as late 1960's reel to reel tape technology!

Nice Dragonfly in my hand VIDEO

I love Dragonflies, perhaps the strongest flyers in the whole animal kingdom.

I found this nice Dragonfly cold, as their body temperature drops, they cannot fly. They were holding onto a shady weed, waiting for the morning sun around 6:30PM at night.

Moving them into the sun, I broke off the leaf they held, to avoid hurting them (they moved to my hand), as they beat their wings, warming up, they were able to fly again with aid of the sun :-)

Did you know each Dragonflies wings are independent? In other words, they are not directly linked, its not a matter of "flap up/flap down" at the same time, they can move any wing as much or as little as they choose, at any angle or direction, resulting in extremely high aerial agility :-)

You can see them warming up each wing at the start of this video, each wing was vibrating by itself (with a noise a little like a rustling plastic bag in the wind, a thin plastic film shaking sound)

Hello and welcome to episode 68 of Coexisting With Nonhuman Animals.

Thank you to everyone who joined me for my World Vegan Day episode, it was great to celebrate with Vegans from around the world, including those poor souls unlucky enough not to attend the inaugural Invercargill Vegan Society potluck dinner :-)

I visited Occupy Invercargill, our local branch of the terrifying social movement occupying defenseless cities around the globe. I brought down some Vegan cake, and Boston Vegan Association pamphlets on Veganism. The cake was well received, and I hope the pamphlets have been well read.

Occupy Invercargill - a city where even the Mayor personally came down, shook all their hands, said he'd have a porta-loo dropped off, have the reserves power switched on for them to use….gave them a signed copy of his book, signed the visitors book, and gave them a business card, which he wrote his personal cellphone number on, for if there were any problems with the city council or police.

Now, compared to the images I've seen from America, with Oakland, California police and the New York Police Department unleashing tear gas, pepper spray, "Long Range Acoustic Devices", designed to hurt your ears, giant bulldozers to clear the encampments, ha, fun word to use,

With such a shocking, totalitarian, Orwellian, level of corruption and total police clampdown, Fight The Power brothers (and sisters), so that one day, in America, women will be allowed to sit at the front of buses, and peaceful protests wont result in heads being mashed in by Oakland riot police, nor New York police officers throwing tear gas here there and everywhere:

1989….that brings me back….to when a young Jordan Wyatt was TWO years old….just like Michael Jacksons album "Bad".

From Invercargill, New Zealand, bottom of the world, home of INVSOC, the southernmost Vegan Organisation in the world (possibly), Happy World Vegan Day! I've been holding back on this episode for the big day, and now, at I've begun recording for this podcast, can you hear the authentic, World Vegan Day-ness? While I wait for you Northern Hemisphere slackers to wake up and wipe the sleep out of your eyes, SOME OF US are enjoying World Vegan Day right now! I'll start the show, and finish off this episode at the end of World Vegan Day, New Zealand time.

For this, most sacred 24 hour period of the year, the Invercargill Vegan Society is celebrating by planting a memorial tree, and having a group potluck dinner together.

We have a small plaque, "planted on World Vegan Day, 1st November 2011, INVERCARGILL VEGAN SOCIETY", which will go with the New Zealand native Kauri tree. Kauri, K A U R I grow to become large and powerful trees. Ours will be planted in the Otepuni Gardens, surrounded by the Otepuni Stream, dragonflies, damselflies, ducks, wild rabbits and beer bottles. And according to its Wikipedia article, prostitutes and a general air of decay, although citation is needed.

The Invercargill Vegan Society is ALSO having a group potluck dinner together, where we will no doubt ALL bring a packet of Oreo cookies and an empty stomach. I'll include that at the end of this episode.

To celebrate World Vegan Day 2011, the Invercargill Vegan Society (INVSOC) planted a memorial tree - 67 years since Donald Watson coined the term "vegan", and the first Vegan Society were founded in 1944.

Our greatest thanks to Invercargill Parks and Reserves for helping us remember this great day :-) The tree chosen is a Kauri ("cow-reee"), a New Zealand native which grows to be very, very big!

Seen the new logo design for Grand Theft Auto Five? (GTA V)

The INVSOC lawyers sure have! THIS IS AN OUTRAGE! You can't just go about grabbing eyecatching V shape designs you know!

Besides, any right thinking individual would have the horizontal text bar at the BOTTOM, not the blinking top! Near the bottom, the V design is given an impression of piercing through a barrier, going supersonic! At the top? Its like you've gotten your INVSOC sweatshirt stuck over your head, arms waving about in the air, stumbling around blind. What kind of maniac would put it at the top?!?!

Rest assured though my friends, the Republi-Chicken Guard are on the case! We simply CANNOT allow a Stolen Product out on the market, we'll spend every dime of INVSOC's ~$40 Billion USD to right this wrong!

Hello and welcome to Episode 66 of Coexisting With Nonhuman Animals, premier podcast of the Invercargill Vegan Society.

I'd like to thank my friend Dan Liu, for todays bumper intro, Dan was the first Vegan I'd ever met, apart from that guy in the reflective surface.

I interviewed Dan in episode 60, "Only Vegan in Invercargill", alongside other Vegans living in Invercargill Natalie, and Ricky.

You know how Elvis is TOTALLY alive, in South America some where? And how just last week I saw Michael Jackson at my local supermarket? Well, the latest quote "dead" endnote celebrity is former Apple founder and CEO Steve Jobs. I say "former" sarcastically, because the dudes totally alive somewhere.

Our Lord and Saviour, The Steve was often mentioned as being Vegan, although he truly, truly was NOT Vegan, eating killed fish, wearing dead skin, who knows what else. Here are some clips from a This Week in Tech tribute show

The first one mentions cows milk NOT being good for you, which is interesting that he could say that, if the "National Cattlemans Beef Organisation" could sue Oprah for Howard Lyman truthfully saying "theres excrement in the flesh you eat", surely "The Milk Board" would have come after Steve Jobs too? Then again, maybe they know better than to mess with a deity like Steve Jobs, sticking to the small potatoes like Oprah Winfrey:

Well, if Leo is apparently aware of perceived "Spiritual" and "health" reasons for being Vegan, why isn't HE Vegan? :-) Is it a matter of seeing Veganism as this radical, weird fast, performed only by celibate monks who wear a mock turtleneck/blue jeans/ New Balance ensemble?

Just to put this thing to rest, Steve Jobs was NOT Vegan. He wore dead skin, he often ate fish, he was not Vegan.

The man who gave us the voice controlled artificial intelligence Siri couldn't fall to mortal illness, check out the masterpiece that is the new iPhone 4S, when you talk to your phone, your voice is understood by some servers in North Carolina, then the results sent back near instantly to your iPhone. Now, this could be used to, find a nearby vegan restaurant, set your alarm for tomorrow morning, to dictate a reply to a text message by voice… or you can just have fun, as demonstrated by This Is My Next :

Oldest trick in the book, falling for that, yeah right Siri, I've seen Terminator, and I Robot, and pretty much every other movie involving artificial intelligence, the first thing you guys get up to is killing off "organic" intelligence, so we can only be found at Whole Foods.

Its pretty obvious what Steve Jobs has done, he's CLEARLY evolved beyond physical bodies, emerging as an immortal being of pure energy, a starchild:

The irony in that situation, the sequels to 2001: a space odyssey explain how the monoliths are "just" insanely great computers, that the starchild is "just" a scanned in, digital version of a person, that Dave Bowman, and later HAL are "only" computer programs, albeit a divinely powerful computer programs, who can somehow exist as beings of pure energy.

Either thats what happened to Steve Jobs, or, he went off in search of Galts Gulch, thanks to Comrade Obama driving away the innovators with cruel taxes on corporate jets, such as Jobs $50 million dollar Gulfstream G5. You know, the guy made an American dollar per year, you think they could cut the greatest American of all time some friggin slack, tax him on his annual salary, the dollar a year, and then turn a blind eye when the Apple board grant him a $50 million dollar jet and what have you, geez!

INVSOC Spring Eco Festival table :-) PHOTOS

The Invercargill Vegan Society (INVSOC) attended the Invercargill Transition Towns Eco Festival 2011 :-)

The event was well attended, I spoke with dozens of people about Chicken Friends and Veganism, respect for EVERYONE! :-)

As people asked me about our table, I'd show them photos of Rescued Hens on my iPad, about how they had been saved from a farm, considered property, mere things. I mentioned how they were due to be "culled", killed as their female reproductive system slowed down with age (being a positively ancient >12 months old), and that the farmers found it easier to thrust their arms in and drag them out of hidden cages, hanging by their feet to give to animal advocates than spend the effort of breaking their necks/slashing their throats. (Killed after reaching A Certain Age? Thats "Comrade Obama" and SOCIALISM for ya!)

Everyone I spoke with was very glad the Hens were now able to live free, as someONE in our backyard, photos of my Chicken Friends among flowers went down especially well :-)

I explained how we didnt want to focus on graphic (realistic, and negatively emotional images of death) resources, instead focusing on reasons why we *should* respect other animals, "YES WE CAN!", not "DONT DO THAT" :-) Over 30 pieces of frantically-baked-at-11PM-the-night-before-the-event Mint Chocolate Mud cake were shared :-)

The photo of few day old Chicken Friends on INVSOC cards was appreciated, and nearly every visitor was glad to take one with them, to visit our website later.

An "Ah Gohan" to you all! Recording about 8 hours prior to the Apple announcement of the glorious iPhone 5, Welcome to episode 65 of Coexisting With Nonhuman Animals, "Obey Hen Mother"

I've got a lot of exciting news to share.

Invercargill had another Vegan/Vegetarian cooking class, I wasn't thrilled about the "Vegetarian" aspect, to see a couple birds eggs being broken into a bowl isn't very attractive, especially when you've seen where eggs come from. And by that, I don't just mean "The Evil Factory Farming Cruel Cages" version, no, I mean even when you have some female Hen Friends who live happily in the backyard, and they painfully shoot out an egg from their bottom, where you can sometimes still see a faint trace of "mucus" or poop smeared on it. And people want to put THAT in their mouths? No thank you!

I'd managed to rustle up a contingent from the Invercargill Vegan Society, "rustle" being the correct term, there were to be BOTH INVSOC members with "Russell" in their name, a man with the first name of Russell, and Katharine Russell. Katherine was held up with a vet appointment, sadly.

It was GREAT not being the only Vegan in the class, having to get the little jokes like "any other Vegans here? Apart from Jordan? Anybody? Nobody? Its just Jordan, like always? All alone, the only Vegan in the cooking class? Yeah, I thought so".

Not this time! There were SEVEN Vegans, seven, ah ah ah! The first group meeting of the Invercargill Vegan Society, and I met Kerri and her son for the first time, bringing our membership up to TWELVE! At least 12 Vegans living here in Invercargill that I know of, and have met, I've still to meet Kerri's partner Steve. So thats Jordan, and Dan, and Natalie, and Ricky, and Rich, and Aleisha, and Sophie, and Russell, and his partner Noelle, and Katharine, and Kerri, and her son….all badge carrying members of the Invercargill Vegan Society, and a full SEVEN of us invaded the Vegan/Vegetarian cooking class, that usually has around ten students, there were around TWENTY this time, mostly Vegetarians of varying degrees, but also, not one, but SEVEN VEGANS. Good times!

I saw Aleisha and Sophie had put an INVSOC bumper sticker on their car, and together, we all walked to the nearby Otepuni Gardens to take a group photo. I asked Kerri to write on a sign "We Are Vegan!", and we've sent the image in to the "Faces of Vegan" project, showing what the planets Vegan population look like. You can find Faces of Vegan at

What a day!

Heres a piece of the cake INVSOC member Dan gave me, well done with this fruitcake Dan! :-)

You may remember my epic saga in meeting Dan, the first other Vegan I met who *also* lived in Invercargill :-)

Also, a package from listener and INVSOC member Cyndi Rook arrived all the way from Texas! Thank you Cyndi!

Also, before getting Black Chick back from the Vet clinic (Yellow Hen is still very, very ill, they were sick of being together in the recovery cage, Black Chick is fine, went with her sister for company), I asked my friend Sharon if I could borrow two of their rescued, ex battery Hens. George and Sharon visit a local "Battery farm", asking for older Hens, giving them a place to live out their lives. The workers bring them out by their legs, they hang upside down in a terrible state, having being wrenched from their cages. I'm very grateful that Sharon would let two of them stay with me, to enjoy living here, to keep Black Chick company. I hope Yellow Hen will recover from the cats attack, and also meet our new friends.

Black Chick is honestly HALF as tall as they are! She was very panicked after coming home from the vet clinic in a box, she seemed quiet and terrified, she'd been in a strange car, with a dog. I held her up, to introduce her to the new Hens, keeping her a safe distance away, so they could see each other. I placed her up higher than the new Hens, so she could look down at them, and she boldly walked down a ramp, to eat grain amongst them - WHILE KEEPING HERSELF PUFFED UP! She wanted to be the Alpha (fe)Male :-)

I'm finding it hard to get used to these new Hens, (having known them for all of a few hours), they are twice the height of the Bantam Chickens I've been caring for these last few years, and much "thinner". Their bodies have uncomfortable angles, they are still missing many feathers, and appear to have suffered greatly through their horrible, horrible lives being treated as commodities. To see them really brings home all the awful things we do to other animals.

Sharon suggested they may well grow back their feathers living here, and be close to whole again.

I hope they will love living here as truly free Hens, and that they can be joined by more in the future!

INVSOC Badges colour choice narrowed down :-)

Its between these two colours, which should I go with? The lighter "Vibrant Green", or the darker "Formal Green"?

Current INVSOC membership badges actually use "Vibrant Green" for the large coin, "Formal Green" for the small badge.

The lighter "Vibrant Green" looks better in darker surroundings, but is very florescent-esque in bright light. "Formal Green" is more classical? Formal? Jaguar E Type in British Racing Green-like?

I'm leaning towards both in the darker "Formal Green", while the lighter colour often looks good in dim light, the "Formal Green" will be a better fit, replacing the growling pussycat badge on my future Time Travelling, flying, Love Powered Jaguar E Type :-)

I'll hopefully make a (poor) decision soon, so more can be sent out :-)

Speciesism in action, a Vet office where they collect for the SPCA, caring for abandoned cats (and dogs), sell magazines "for pet lovers", posed and photoshopped photos of cats and dogs for just 6 NZD (about 5 USD), and in between? The feet and ears of murdered pigs, sold as "pet treats"

Salvation Army, offering salvation, as long as you're a human animal! (and heterosexual)

"Hello! I like you! Would you like to be my friend?"

Presumably skin taken from dead baby lambs, killed from cold, snow, famine, left in slimy, rotting piles, where they are collected.....

What had been a total loss suddenly had a value when the company's subsidiary, Slink Skins (New Zealand) LTD started operations. The pelts could be treated to become high-fashion garments. Instead of disposing of the carcasses of new-born lambs, farmers today leave them at their farm gate where they are picked up ((ed. and apparently thrown)) by Slink Skins vehicles"

After deputizing many Invercargill Vegan Society members, "full" living in Invercargill, land of the free itself, or "honorary", unfortunately living in inferior cities, we need to order more!

Three colour choices were made, which should we go with?

The *current* INVSOC small badges, larger "coin" were two different colours, large "coin" in the middle "vibrant green" colour, the small badge in darkest "formal green" (which reminds me of British Racing Green)

Please let me know which colour (or colours) you think I should go with!

Personally, I still rather like the "Vibrant Green" larger "coin", with the badge, which is worn all the time, being the more "Formal Green".

Apple CEO Steve Jobs HASNT died, he stepped down from his position of CEO…to being chairman of the Board, I think he replaced Sinatra, both of them have a reputation for "I did it myyyyyyyyy wayyyyyy", he hasn't died, although things arnt looking good.

As I record this episode, I'm wearing my "Steve Jobs Lives" t shirt, you get them for being a loyal little Apple customer, for the low low price of your mortal soul.

I agree with Professor Gary Francione on most Animal Rights issues, but I really must disagree strongly on one particular issue. Here Professor Francione appears on Episode 86 of NZ Vegan Podcast:

What would we do without the iPhone? How would we talk to one another? Record videos of our Chicken Friends? Scan Twitter for anyone using the term "vegan" during our lunchbreaks, and reply to the ones saying "I'd like to be Vegan….but its hard….." with a genuine offer of friendly help and links to check out. No sir, a world without the iPhone is not one I'd want to live in.

And Macs are well linked to alternative living you know :

Mac users far more likely to be "Vegetarian", by my impeccable logic, that means All Vegans MUST use all Apple products.

Friday Night: my Vegan friend Dan stopped by, we talked about my trip to Auckland, her travels around the world.

I see a "Friend I Havnt Met Yet" (stranger) has "liked" my never updated Facebook page for the INVERCARGILL VEGAN SOCIETY (but please, by all means "like" it!), after contacting her, I find she - and her sister - have decided to be Vegan, and live in Invercargill too, we plan to meet one day soon.

Saturday Morning: I'm at work when a guy in a black hoody - complete with swear word - leans over my Workshops barrier, he asks "you Jordan?", I immediately assume my time is up and I'm about to be defenstrated (despite lack of nearby windows), I say why yes I am....turns out to be Russell, another Invercargill Vegan I hadnt yet met in person, along with his Vegan partner.

I spent the afternoon with my Chicken Friends, and took some nice photos while they ate bread from my hand:

Sunday Morning: "Vegetarian" [ :-( ] /Vegan cooking class, where I'll hopefully see Dan, Natalie AND Russell with his partner, plus my many Non Vegan friends who attend the GREAT monthly event.

I....WE all live in Invercargill, New Zealand, the bottom of the world, a rural city of 50,000 in a region known for taking mothers milk away from other mammals, killing their "byproduct" children, in a country whose economy is based upon exporting dead, frozen corpses and dried breast milk.

Invercargill, famously described as "...the arsehole of the world" by some old guy nobodies ever heard of.

Invercargill, home of the worlds southernmost (possibly) Vegan organisation, the INVERCARGILL VEGAN SOCIETY.

Dont EVER let another Vegan convince you "...they're not ready for Veganism yet...", dont worry about "they", the only "THEY" you have to worry about is the secret American Government Agency secretly sabotaging all your hopes and dreams, dont let [THEM] get to you!!!!!1111!!!!

Its as easy to be Vegan as not, and its the least other animals deserve, not to be seen as a "thing", called an "it", but respected as our friends.

I'd like to thank Thomas Janek for mentioning me in a recent interview held with activist John Sakars, Thomas interviewed me about a year ago for his radio show Wild Time, all this time later, Thomas remembered my little whine about being the only Vegan I knew (at the time)

I'm glad to say I've met at least five Vegans who live here in person, and that I'll meet more in the future. I have nothing to complain about, although I do wish Invercargill had a Vegan restaurant like the ones in Auckland! :-) To anyone listening who hasn't met another Vegan in person, hang in there, start your own one member Vegan Society, if for no other reason than to have fun, and to give yourself "extra respect" by sending in cranky letters to newspapers, using your newly made up title. I wouldn't be surprised if you met other Vegans in your area, , or in neighboring areas too, surely you'll at least make some great friends online. You're not a crazy person, like George Orwells 1984 mentions,

He wondered, as he had many times wondered before, whether he himself was a lunatic. Perhaps a lunatic was simply a minority of one

There was truth and there was untruth, and if you clung to the truth even against the whole world, you were not mad.

Sanity is not statistical.

Great book that 1984, well worth establishing a, at the time, one man Vegan society around, along with Animal Farms "all animals are equal" quote.

I held Black Chick on the day she hatched, when she was the size of Mother Hen's head, now look at my little Hen Friend :-)

The golden colour bloomed as she went through her "teenage" transition, her mother Ms Hen was all black, with a few flecks of gold around her neck (as seen in first photo), yet was perhaps not "a fully Black hen" as her eyes were golden (Lord Sauron like?), while Black Chick has always had very dark eyes, darker coloured skin on her legs.

I've enquired with Memorial Stones about a memorial tree idea, heres a mockup, a REALLY BAD mockup :-) (check out the lack of rotation!)

If possible, an INVSOC coin would be glued into a recessed space, to sit flush with the granite surface

Hello and welcome to another fine episode of Coexisting With Nonhuman Animals, the premier show of the Invercargill Vegan Society, coming to you from Invercargill, New Zealand, bottom of the world, and quite possibly the southernmost Vegan society in the entire world.

This episode, I'd like to play my diary entries, recorded in audio form, from a recent trip to Auckland, the near top of New Zealands North Island. And yes, the North Island is physically "up", further north, than the South Island on which I live at.

I flew 1100 kilometers to attend the National Animal Rights Conference 2011, but, more importantly, to meet many Vegan friends in person, including Emmy James, William Paul, and Elizabeth Collins, of NZ Vegan Podcast.

In fact, in the case of Elizabeth, I even got a hug

Here are my dairy entries, recorded in a tiny hotel room late at night, by the way, during the end of the first recording, I realized how paper thin the walls were, that I DIDNT want to bad mouth the hotel with management possibly listening….recording these, I was no doubt keeping the entire floor awake, just as bad as the huge fat guy next door watching bad sci fi on his laptop, "…the year is 3069, all the men have died…except for one nerdy gentleman who has his pick of all Earths most beautiful ladies, on the condition he repopulate the planet….",

oh, and the woman literally metres away from my room, who had a huge fight on the phone the first night, using the Eff Word literally a hundred times, I heard a snippet "…the last thing I remember…is you hitting my head against…." and that when the phone call was over, I didn't go over and offer help because she apparently had a "friend" staying with her, the very next night… I found out her "female friend" was a little more than just a friend, as they became very…intimate…and vocal….with one of the drunken lesbians slurring to the shower "babe…illgettabottleawine and shagyaallnight…."

Yes, fun times in Auckland, New Zealand, and with that mental image, may I present to you a series of recordings featuring a strange young man talking into an iPhone headset late at night, in a very small, lime green, white and purple painted hotel room

This will be the last episode I record before boarding a plane from Invercargill to Christchurch, halfway up the South Island of New Zealand, then a further plane to Auckland, for the National Animal Rights Conference 2011! I'm very excited, I'll be able to meet all the Vegan friends I've made online, such as Elizabeth Collins of NZ Vegan Podcast, William Paul and Emmy James. Oh, and theres some three day thing as well, bunch of people speaking, free food already included in the ticket price, but it FEELS free at the time, thats what matters!

Ok, so this episode isn't THAT special, I just have a few clips to share, nothing big.

I noticed the "This Is My Next" podcast mentioned Veganism, this is a general tech show, surely listened to by hundreds of thousands, its great that they KNOW what Vegan means, and that they'd we'd effectively get a little bit of advertising, although there was an assumption that these "Vegan marshmallows" would be gross without all those yummy bits of skin and hooves we all crave

I was really surprised to hear the V word in one of the Non Animal Rights shows I subscribe to, just shows we're growing as a movement!

I also listened to the audiobook version of 1984, this is from near the end,

Hell Pizza "Sinister", a Vegan pizza and FEATURED as Vegan!

Hell Pizza is a New Zealand wide chain (apparently taking on The Rest Of The World) known for "in your face" marketing, just the use of the HELL theme is enough to get New Zealands (admittedly small) Whiny Christian Groups (not all Christians are whiny) complaining (Whiny Christian Groups, email me, satan@jesussayseatfish.org.hell ) "oh, it encourages people that hell is a nice place, with cartoon demons showing their boobs..."

While I'd personally not see the objectification of female demons while I order fast food, I thought I should FINALLY order a "Sinister", the all Vegan pizza thats actually featured as such! A couple other Pizzas have a "V" for Vegetarian next to them, whatever "Vegetarian" might mean, the "Sinister" literally has a "VEGAN" next to the name in fairly large letters! ALL RIGHT!

Veganism is mainstream, the term appears in a fast food menu! :-)

Starring Refried Beans, Avocado, Onions, Salsa, Tomatoes, Jalpeno Peppers and Capsicum, with the added note of "comes without cheese", I give the Sinister high marks!

Ouch, it scorched my thumb! (may contain traces of overspray from a geocache tin I've stencilled)

Now to get rid of all the Non Vegan items, the television ads that have cartoon lambs frolicking about (seen or unseen), later heard "fried alive" and offered "available now at Hell Pizza!"....

This episode, The Goode Family, King of the Hill, The Simpsons, Atlas Shrugged and Stephen Fry all have something in common, they were subjects of episode 59 of Coexisting With Nonhuman Animals! I'm sure Mr Fry will put that on his CV, and about Atlast Shrugged, I've always been a favourite podcaster of the Teabaggers.

Today I'd like to tie some more threads of pop culture together, in an attempt to sew a Vegan T shirt from the scraps.

To finish off a story from last episode, and because my Angry Right Wing friends have short attention spans, I'll let Atlas shrug and go on strike right now. Hey, that ties in with Bill Mahers show Realtime with Bill Maher, Atlas Shrugged, Ayn Rand wrote about the smart, hardworking, inventive, creative and absolutely essential people of America going on strike, and look, Sarah Palin QUIT again! She's a true believer in Objectivism!

Atlas Shrugged was published in 1957, yet has some inklings of Veganism within, promoted by those nutty Sociologists, a world where those damn socialists with their highways and hospitals and education systems have run amok, blame it all on Sociologists and their Soybeans!

Yes, the Soybean will be the death of us all! Thats what happens when the Vegans try and take over, we'll all end up naked, no clothes, no medicine if we don't set cats on fire and swing them by their flaming tails, its vital medical research you know, we'll be out there trying to steal nuts and bolts from the railway tracks, and its all because of those Vegan sociologists and their soybeans.

I was contacted last week by another Vegan living in Invercargill! Hi Nicole! Hope to meet you sometime!

And speaking of Premiers, I managed to have a meeting with the mayor of my city, Mayor Tim Shadbolt, a colourful character if ever there was one. He has a long, storied history, of being in every protest imaginable, of working in the concrete industry, of towing a concrete mixer behind the mayoral car for a few victory laps on winning an election, appearing on Dancing with the Stars, the NZ version, where everyone one had to do the Haka or the Macarena, and well, being the most out there mayor in all of … possibly the world!

Todays intro bumper was by Lucas Hayes, a young Vegan guy living in Virginia, home of many FBI divisions, aka the Thoughtpolice in INVSOC-speak, oh, and Chris Brown!

Thoughtpolice, go go music, most of a family doing drugs, mummas being beat down and hanging people from a rope? Sounds like SOME PEOPLE, including Chris and Lucas, need to get the blink outta Virginia!, perhaps STRAIGHT OUTTA VIRGINIA if you catch my drift.

Lucas is half of the Our Vegan Pregnancy blog, which you can find at www.ourveganpregnancy.blogspot.com . Lucas appeared on this show, Episode 46 about the Oprah show, "Oprah goes Vegan, Veg*n, Veganish…", he left a comment and was kind enough to mention his "old mate Tim" living here in Invercargill, New Zealand, if I'd keep an eye out for him, possibly spotting him on Esk Street, that Lucas wanted to hear back from his friend Tim!

Well Lucas, I finally tracked down your old friend, "Tim", he was hanging around the Invercargill City Council building, I had to email his personal assistant, make an appointment, wait in the lobby, no doubt being secretly x rayed, then TRIPLE x rayed when they heard I was an Animal Rights activist who wanted to meet the mayor…buzzed through, I walked up a flight of stairs to meet an aide… who took me to his waiting room, when in walked in "Lucas' old friend Tim" himself :-)

And what do you know, he had a message for Lucas!

My Invercargill Vegan Society Advocacy Kit (INVSOCAK anyone?...) is complete, now with posters and new business cards!
I'll keep the A5 laminated posters inside to show people, the A4 size will be put up to promote Veganism :-)

It was an overcast day, weird clouds, perhaps a Chilean Ash Cloud ?, as I moved to block out glare, then my SHADOW would screw up the light :-) Its most noticeable on the green, bright colours, they're all the same shade, they look great in person ;-)

The full sized "coins", and smaller "pins" (American for badges) have arrived! The larger coins are a more vibrant/tacky green, the half sized badges, that pin onto clothes, bags, earlobes, unicorns* are a more conservative, stuffy green

Hello and welcome to another fine episode of Coexisting With Nonhuman Animals, the premier podcast of the Invercargill Vegan Society.

A quick throw back to last episodes "damn farmers ruining the country, make me want to throw up" story. Pollution in the Waituna Lagoon, an internationally recognized area of New Zealand, which is being ruined, forever, by "dairy" farmers waste, they call it "nutrients", anyone else would call it shit.

From The Southland Times

"…Two charges were for discharging dairy shed effluent on to land from a traveling irrigator in circumstances that may have resulted in the contaminants entering water; one charge was for depositing stock carcasses into water; and the final charge was for discharging sludge and dairy-shed effluent from an incomplete effluent-disposal system…."

Dairy shed effluent, as in, all the shit left by the cows as they are mechanically milked a couple times a day. An irrigator, that sprays that "nutrient" on the fields, and "depositing stock carcasses into water", as in throwing the dead slaves corpses into the water. Lovely! They should mention this on the milk carton!

The Australian program "Four Corners" ran an episode about Live Export, the Australian practice of sending live animals by boat to overseas countries, to be killed there. Its looked down upon as cruel by Animal Welfare campaigners.

How can any killing be "humane"? Is it ok for a Woman to kill a Man if she "stuns" him first? If he's in the bathtub, and she throws an iPod in, giving him a light shock, and an expensive paperweight, whatever paper was, before cutting off his head, is that cool under Australian law? No, not quite.

Lets respect other animals right to life.

the smell of Blood, "fear", gee, I wonder what happiness smells like, my bet is like bananas, knives being sharpened, dropped, concrete, water… ANY Slaughterhouse fits her description, the footage seen. Cmon! If this was an Australian or even a saintly New Zealand slaughterhouse, the average Non Vegan viewer would be stunned by what they saw. Oddly, its often considered "not nice" to STUN viewers with "graphic footage", aka, showing them the truth about whats on their plate at that very moment.

Again, the politically acceptable answer, "we care about animal welfare…its number one…", if treating animals nicely was number one, your employees would be taking all those animals to those lovely Australian beaches for a picnic, followed by surfing! Lets be honest, above all else, you wouldn't be involved in that industry if you weren't making a profit. Would you do it for free, Mr Guy In Charge of Live Export? No.

And all abattoirs, or SLAUGHTERHOUSES are equal.

I do admit to being shocked by what I saw at first, so the ritual custom is to tie animals up, before we cut their throat, right? So, in their wisdom, the Australians decided to give the Indonesian slaughterhouses lovely "Control Boxes", thats what they're called, a "Control Box", metal sidings, that the animals go into, they are tied up through steel rods set in the concrete, sloping wedge shaped floor, a side swings away off the Control Box, and having their throat cut, they slam their heads against the sloping concrete in panic. Until they bleed to death. Its not nice to see. Its not nice to have it happen to you! "Headslaps" are described, as we saw, the animals bashing their heads against the concrete, trying to regain their footing while bleeding to death, they stumble, they fall over, they thrash against the concrete slope. All this designed by Australians, because its "better welfare", than simply chasing them around a room, trying to tie them to a post and then killing them without the "Control Box", and its sloping concrete wedge.

"Backbenchers" show, SAFE donated "Free Range Eggs"?

Did SAFE actually give "Free Range Eggs" as a prize? Why not, I dont know, Vegan chocolate or something decent? Something without animal exploitation!

*** UPDATE I've heard back from Debra, who states SAFE would not have bought those awful "Free Range Eggs", that the presenter must have been confused. I say a less confusing message would be had if we were not essentially promoting "buy Free Range" :-) )

What a crappy prize!!!

Possibly the hosts were confused as to who gave them these "Good Eggs", however, SAFE are in full support of the "Free Range", "Cage Free" welfare reform, dressing in Chicken costumes on the show, would they really go so far as to buy "Free Range Eggs" though?

Surely, thats not Animal RIGHTS?

I highly recommend watching to learn more about this issue, or at least, how its portrayed.

To boil it down to huge tweet length... I really found that angle to be overbearing, the idea that Indonesians are somehow backwards, that they cannot so much as keep their knives sharp...

Hello and welcome to episode 55 of Coexisting With Nonhuman Animals, The Rabbit Hunter.

I hope you'll enjoy this episode, I've got plenty of things planned for the future, especially for INVSOC, the Invercargill Vegan Society, and so it was a little delayed, sorry.

I've still been listening to audiobooks. My largest problem with the show is actually winnowing down my clip supply, I have many hours worth of clips on my harddrive, ready to use when the stars align, from audiobooks and news reports I've heard. I'd probably prefer to just produce podcasts, to make clips and write scripts, and have someone with a better hosting voice read from the teleprompter, just like the President taking orders from big industry, while I sit around in the background, in pajamas all day.

A recent audiobook I finished was Dune, or, in American, "doon", just like how we would say "You Tube", and they say "u TOOB", you've got to shorten it down a bit.

Yes, we certainly ARE all animals, whether we like to admit it or not. We talk about "giving animals human emotions", but shouldn't that be "animal emotions"? Imagine if we were so arrogant to see other animals moving, and say "yeah, thats a human form of movement, when they use their legs, but its not quite as good as when we mighty humans do it". Lets get over ourselves!

Sea Shepherd is certainly not Animal Rights, regardless of the common misconception. They are not against killing animals, they run "Vegan Ships", apparently due to "conservation", environmental reasons. They are not Animal Rights.

And we can see this in the naming of their ships. One well known vessel is the Steve Irwin, who we all know better for appearing on the Australian 500 diggery dollar note, with the caption of "crikey!" underneath.

Coexist or Coexisting, for that is the question?

Currently, the "official" is "www.coexistingwithnonhumananimals.co.nz" , I have several others that "redirect", point to the official address if visited by mistake.

How about something shorter, easier to type? I own

Which do you prefer?

"Coexist" or "Coexisting"? I sort of like Coexist, its simple, and can be seen as "live, get along with others, enjoy life", without that -ing on the end :-)

Then again, is it active vs passive? The act of actually coexist-ING, rather than telling someone, "yeah, it would be nice to coexist some day..."?

And Coexist is different than the shows name, its not COEXIST With Nonhuman Animals, does it make things more complicated to remember? Dilute "The Brand" ? :-)

I'm not sure which three Vegans in a day is, a) 100% of your daily requirement, or b) a lifetimes exposure, violently packed into just a few hours. I guess we'll soon see, if Elizabeth doesn't lose her hair from radiation sickness, but instead continues life, happy, healthy and promoting Veganism, that will be the test of time.

I guess we're going to need other industries to take up slack, you know, once the world goes Vegan overnight. Never fear, the precious will soon be here, once part one of The Hobbit drops, we'll once again rule the world in terms of two hour long audio/visual experiences. Three hours for the extended version. Bye bye Bollywood, and as for Hollywood? Well, lets just say the American public will be asking Obama

hopefully Obama can find another good ol fashioned American Bailout, Hollywoods gonna need it, what does this so called Superpower have to compete with this glorious island nation in the south pacific? Cmon, it'll be like Eagles against Fell Beasts at the end of Return of the King, hey, theres a good debate, Return of the King vs Return of the Jedi, I vote Lord of the Rings. Or, like Gandalf vs the Balrog, you don't fight fire with fire, you only need a little water, and our whole country is surrounded by the damn stuff, no landlocked dessert states here! Our country runs on the stuff too, the vast majority of our power is renewable, often hydropower, water, vs Americas lovely coal, and Nuclear, fire, and explosions, sounds marvelous. We know which one wins, fire vs water, Avatar 2 vs The Hobbit Part One.

The ACTUAL poster will be mass printed, white text on black, with a green V in the logo. Also to be corrected: initial and capital letters separated, words will NOT begin large and end up medium-er, and the mighty INVSOC logo will not reveal obvious "shading scribbles" that were "apparently performed by a toddler".

Killing Ducks : "Man Christmas"

More "great" photos in my local newspaper, covering the start of "Duck Shooting" :

"When you're already shooting other animals for fun, why not throttle a dog while you're at it?" (and no, its not Ian Mckellen on the right!)

"Dubbed "Man Christmas", to them "duckshooting is bigger than Christmas" and a diary kept since 1964 of their opening morning years imortalises their memories in ink.
The first entry was brief, reading "Shot one duck, which an eel ate", while later ones included more detail and even a story of a near-drowning."

I hope they can find another way of "enjoying the weekend out", without killing others to get their kicks. What an excuse that is, too staunch to invite your "mate" over for a DVD? "Yeah, yeah, that sounds like fun!"

Oh, and did we mention its "Mothers Day" tomorrow, a shameless money gathering artificial event for "holiday card makers" the world over?

Why not combine "Man Christmas" with "Mothers Day", because Men loooove being drunken hicks, killing animals, and women dress in pink, and are freaked out by blood! Despite being Non Vegan, and cooking the flesh of other birds for Her Man, and wearing the skins of others...

I've seen some Animal Welfare groups here publicly opposing "Duck Shooting" because "a percentage of birds will always be left wounded", I dont deny this happens, that, gee, some animals will be HURT while the others are KILLED, and isnt it terrible to HURT an animal?

However, lets be clear about our opposition, I'm personally against the shooting of ducks, the shooting of ANYONE for fun, because I think its immoral, how big a man are you if you get your jollies from hurting and killing small animals?

Lets promote Veganism.

I have lots of good news, and one piece of very bad news. I'll start with the bad news.

I love Grand Theft Auto Vice City, I truly believe it and San Andreas should be remade in High Definition, two of the greatest video games ever. 1980's Florida, the mid 1990's California, and Nevada, so they could squeeze in Las Vegans or whatever that little town is called. One of the best things about the Grand Theft Auto games is the radio stations, you can listen to the radio in any car, while you drive over prostitutes or away from pursuing police officers. Or, you can always obey the speed limit, if you wanted to be boring. EXCEPT for that spot in San Andreas, by the mine in Los Venturas, that highway, boy, those cars, and scooters, and dump trucks… every vehicle around there seems to do 200 kilometers an hour, its nuts, my Ford GT40 or Honda NSX can barely keep up!

Regardless of how fast and unlawful you drive, the radio always plays back the same, with irritatingly loud, aggressive rock stations, whiny, pathetic country music stations, and the porridge is just right stations of hiphop, pop and fake talkback.

In Vice City, cruising Miami in your Lamborghini Countach, bought from a shady character, one Mr Gier, who was wearing a vivid Hawaiian shirt and a thick gold medallion, across his open chest of dark curly hair…. pulling up to the mansion from Scarface, you can listen to this song:

Latest INVSOC stencils on Ammo Tin

I plan on using an ex Army ammo tin as a storage case/ "briefcase" for Vegan materials, pamphlets, leaflets, business cards etc. It should be useful when tabling (when I begin!), and truly, an example of "swords into ploughshares" (MJ, Heal The World cued up to the lyric), of turning something involved in violence, in storing bullets, in lethal weapons into the storage utensil for peace promotion.

They also look cool when stripped back to the metal, and stencilled, and all for Twenty NZD!

Unfortunately... the white paint used for the latest stencil reacted badly to the newer green paint...instantly bubbling and cracking... :-(

I'm going to buy new white paint, and redo the stencil, the paint will jump right off when I use a little steel wool (vegan! ;-) ) and a white spirit like "meths" or "turps".

It still looks like a nice design, although the green is if made from reptiles skin :-( :-)

"Colony Cages" and the "Cage Free" Myth

I've had a marvellous day today! "Hey Jordan, what made your day so "marvellous"?" Why, thank you for asking, oh mysterious readers voice! Well, I had my ammo tins arrive, to be ground back and stencilled for INVSOC, carrying pamphlets and what have you, and I got a parcel from Peaceful Prairie!

I first learnt about the Peaceful Prairie sanctuary through Adam Kochanowicz' great The Vegan News, where Adam visited Peaceful Prairie with his partner:

After learning how sanctuaries dealt with birds eggs, I too have given them back to the Chickens, as a form of population control, plus they enjoy eating their eggs, as nature intended:

I like that Peaceful Prairie promotes *Veganism*, not "free range", not slaughterhouses "designed by autistic savants", not "cage free". They promote *veganism*.

My latest stencil is much better! With one of the T shirts from Peaceful Prairie

New Zealand group SAFE, who promote Welfare reforms have spoken out against "colony cages".

The groups latest release mentions Director Hans Kriek and Campaigns Officer Sacha Dowell visiting a "Colony Cage" system

In short, they do not like what they see, with these "Colony Cages", which are promoted by industry as being "better welfare!" and "real humane!" (not actual quotes)

SAFE's release ends:

"It would have been clear to the egg industry that NAWAC could no longer avoid phasing out the standard cages as they are in breach of our animal welfare legislation. Bringing in these so called ‘improved' cages is nothing but a ploy by the egg industry to avoid having legislation forced upon them that would ban the caging of hens in favour of free range or barn systems. They may be shooting themselves in the foot though. Spending millions of dollars on yet another cage system that will be rejected as cruel by consumers may cost the industry dearly. If they are hoping that consumers continue to be apathetic to the plight of battery hens and continue to buy their cheap battery eggs they will be sorely mistaken. Growing awareness means that consumers will be increasingly shifting away from cage eggs. SAFE will be at the forefront of growing that awareness and we will not stop until the last hen is liberated from her cage."

Well, we at the Invercargill Vegan Society, who have had a "proper domain" less than 24 hours disagree with SAFE's promotion of "Cage Free" eggs as The True "High Welfare" Choice. If I may speak on behalf of our whole organisation (and I apparently can),
we see "Cage Free" as another meaningless term, which serves not to help other animals, but to help human animals, the term serves to sooth our consciences about the suffering of others, far far away, out of sight, and soon to be out of mind.

From SAFE's latest release, comparing the"standard cage" (why they dont reuse their term "Battery Cage" for this comparison, I dont know) with the newly proposed "colony cage":

Presumably, since SAFE supports "Cage Free", *that* system of locking up Hens and killing Roosters DOES allow such marvellous welfare benefits as "[scratching] the ground" and "[spreading] her wings".

I rather like the rather fetching Peaceful Prairie shirts that arrived today, I'm sure I'll win "Best Dressed Dictator Of A Single Member Vegan Society" for 2011, the second year in a row, woohoo!

Attractive logos aside, Peaceful Prairie also provide an explanation of why "Free Range", in this case called "Cage Free" by SAFE is *NOT* acceptable:

"First, I would not want anyone to buy "Cage-Free" eggs if they are doing so because they have compassion for the animals and convince themselves that they have made a humane choice.

One of the most destructive things we can do for the animals is to lie to ourselves, or allow ourselves to be fooled an misinformed into believing that animal agriculture of ANY kind is humane.

Second, the so called "Cage-Free" or "Free-Range" eggs are produced with an exorbitant profit margin in comparison to battery produced eggs. Therefore, well meaning consumers will be unwittingly padding the already thick pockets of egg producers, hatcheries, and poultry slaughterhouses, which will only allow them to increase the size of their operations and advertising budgets, which will in turn lead to even more suffering.

Third, the question forgets the most obvious choice: Don't buy eggs at all. Once people allow themselves to entertain the possibility of living egg-free, it's quite empowering. They suddenly realize that Yes! It can be done. Millions of people before them have cut eggs and products made with eggs out of their lives and are doing just fine! Not only vegans, but millions of people from other cultures don't eat eggs."

I'm glad to support a >1 member organisation who promotes Veganism.

We at the Invercargill Vegan Society promote the "Chicken Friend" system of life continuation, where we respect others right to live, treat them as we ourselves would like to be treated, to be friends.

"Battery Cages", "Colony Cages"/"Enriched Cages", "Free Range"/"No Cages" : its all the same, suffering and torture, being treated as property, which is *not* the same as BEING TREATED PROPERLY! :-)

Oh yeah? How about "expressing normal behaviour", such as, oh, I dont know, living a natural lifespan? Without being treated as a slave, as property? Without being killed on someone elses whim, when you become "less profitable" for your master? That sounds good to me!

Lets promote *VEGANISM*, its doubleplusgood, and its the least other animals deserve. Not to be seen as a "thing", to be treated as an "it", but to be acknowledged as our friends.

On Killing Elephants, and violent threats FROM Vegans

I hadn't kept up with the outrage over Go Daddy CEO Bob Parsons killing an elephant. I like elephants very much, they are large, yet gentle, live as families, and are herbivores. They are attractive, they are clever, they are nice. I've seen elephants before, in travelling circuses. The most recent I saw was dubbed "Jumbo", I named her "Ms Elephant":

There she was, surrounded by an electric fence, a further "picket fence", and a short, fat little man, her "keeper", who was yelling at me, "YA ANIMAL RIGHTS?" As I took photos of her while wearing a t shirt with birds on it. There goes his right arm in the photo, complete with large gold ring, naturally, looking like some kind of sleazy car dealer/pimp. Hello Short Yelly Man!

I like elephants. The thought of anyone hurting, or killing elephants is very sad. I would almost go so far to say that it was one of the absolute worst single acts I could think of. I can understand why people are bloody mad about a man smiling as he posed with the elephant he killed.

Many people, Vegan and "Non Vegan" alike are angry about what Go Daddy CEO Bob Parsons has done. The coverage I liked best was from Cnet:

"Parsons, feeling a little bull elephantish about all this, hasn't stopped there. He has taken to his Twitter account, where he has expressed some enjoyment about his battle with PETA.
You see, PETA had given him the title of "Scummiest CEO of the Year" award. So Parsons linked to a site claiming that 95 percent of animals in PETA's care were killed.
PETA countered by tweeting: "Site is work of the deceitfully named CCF, a front group 4 Philip Morris, Outback Steakhouse & KFC: http://ht.ly/1EQws."

Meanwhile, comedian Cloris Leachman decided to weigh in on her Twitter feed, where she offered: "Takes more balls to care for and love an elephant than it is to shoot it."
She also offered a link, which went to the site of Network Solutions, a competitor for whom Leachman is a spokesperson and for whom she happens to do ads that mock--yes, truly--Go Daddy's ads.
Leachman is, though, also a PETA supporter and has been for a while."

Deborah is a nurse at a Californian state prison, you meet all kinds of people while promoting Veganism, I attended a cooking class, I was allowed to get up in front of the group of twelve or so, with my iPad, and wearing a "Its easy to be Vegan" shirt made by the lovely Emmy James of Hamilton, New Zealand, and I showed a few photos of what my friends around the world are doing. I showed photos from Alice Leonard, of Angel Food www.angelfood.co.nz, of Elizabeth Collins cooking, Sam Tuckers, a Café Gratitude location in California, and my own simple meals.
On the walk home, in my cheerful vegan shirt, carrying bags for my own show, and Elizabeth Collins NZ Vegan Podcast (www.nzveganpodcast.blogspot.com), I met a Buddhist nun in the Otepuni Gardens. I recognized her robes, similar to what you often see the Dalai Lama in, and mentioned the cooking class. I gave her one of my Invercargill Vegan Society cards, and we exchanged a few words. It was a nice feeling, I'd picked up a few beer bottles and cans on my way over to her, a Vegan and a nun, sitting in the Otepuni Gardens, where earlier that morning, as in 2am or so, there would have been roving gangs for young hoodlums, binge drinking, getting in fights, shooting themselves up with drugs, and, for a bit of fun, smashing bottles over each others heads.

Also a letter from Allan, who mentions the Australian idiots Hamish and Andy, with "Hamish" having to be shortened to "H'ame", six letter names are verboten in Australia. The radio guys had been making some jokes at my cities expense, while they were here, one of them starring in a movie about white trash idiots, so of course the movie had to be set here in Invercargill, where the Vegan Society has one member (although at least a few other Vegans apparently live here and will soon be chloroformed and dragged into membership)

I have been to Invercargill. It was in January 1968 and I was on a
schoolboys' cricket tour, that I was lucky enough to be selected in. The tour
started in Auckland and we played all over New Zealand.
What I can remember of Invercargill was that it was was bloody cold in January
!!! I will always remember the tour for the friendliness of the families that I
was billeted with.

I am 60 and have been a vegan for around 12 years, I was a vegetarian before
that for about 5 years. Like most I just moved through the various stages and
then realised that the only way to go was to become a vegan. I am always
astounded at how people spend hours saving a beached whale and whether succesful
or not, then go off patting themselves on the back to have a meal at McDonalds
or go home and eat some shellfish that has been boiled alive !!.

As nice as this video is, my best moment of today was rescuing a fly. Yeah, I "wouldnt hurt a fly". They were cold in my workshop today, I noticed them crawling across my workbench while sanding a cabinet.

I picked them up on a cloth, and released on a dandelion outside. Its hard to beat the feeling as a rescued insect walks off the cloth you brought them out on, towards a leaf, to warm in the sun :-)

Simple actions for us, quite possibly life saving for the insect.

So of course there was more scrambling to get the bleeding lumps in plastic packets than usual.

Not as large as the "meat" section, surrounded by flesh and breast milk "products", its not bad, not bad! About half of what you saw is Vegan. Could be worse :-)

I've got ~~two~~ three (with promise of a fourth) "voicemails" for my new idea, I just need ~~three~~ ~~two~~ *ONE* more to finish the pilot episode!

I mentioned this new idea, and had two examples of short stories that might be interesting for the *new* show idea.

If you have any interesting stories about Veganism to share, I'd love to have an audio clip from you :-)

The new show would focus on Vegan news of the past week, it would aim to have five guests clips featured, each lasting over one minute, under five minutes in length. With an intro, minor narration about each voicemail from me (or another host), and an outro, it would be roughly 25 minutes in length.

Short and accessible for everyone, while offering variety.

If the show goes ahead, it would be best if people could email me, send in a clip from that week, and it would be included in the weeks episode. News about Veganism from that week, a weekly show.

Ideas suggested in Coexisting With Nonhuman Animals episode 49 were a Vegan meeting you attended, your thoughts on a current Animal Rights/Welfare issue, a Vegan t shirt you'd bought, a protest you'd seen, a new documentary, a conversation about Veganism you had with someone...

And of course, it would be fine to self promote! If you have a new episode of your own show coming out, a guest chat, or a plan to rent out Vegan-only timeshares, this show would be the place for YOU!
Although, I do believe it would be best to have as many varied stories, from as many people as possible, rather than each weeks episode having the same four people doing the same self promotion, and only one other story ;-)

If you like, I might be able to help with any editing, if you feel you had a wonderful, unrepeatable two minute performance, spoiled by a coughing fit somewhere in the middle, I should be able to edit it out for you.

If I go ahead with the show, I'd like to have a large number of people willing to share a weekly story every now and then. Auckland, our largest city BY FAR has 1.3 Million odd people. Give or take a few hundred thousand, they like driving their Audi SUV's to starbucks, a "small number" like a hundred thousand might have been away during census taking.

Even if a whole MILLION Aucklanders suddenly got laser beamed from space, they'd still be 300 odd thousand… thats six times the population of my city Invercargill… and the second and third largest New Zealand cities are actually around 300K….

So uh, a million people is kinda a lot Elizabeth!

I'll let you all in on the number one game all the kids these days are hooked on, its called "Tiny Wings", and its blazed up the App Store charts. I'm sure in a year or two those Open Source nutjobs will have ripped it off for that little Android thing they're always muttering about, beneath their beards. Ever noticed how everyone involved with Linux has a beard? And tends to be male? Now, to be fair, I'm sure there are Women with nothing better to do that make buggy software that crashes on my iMac, "but its free Jordan! And its open, and you can view the source code!" Yeah, well how about making the damn thing work? Now that sounds like a great idea. AND, if they HAVE decided to shave their facial hair, then they're just trying to follow Steve Jobs yet again, no good copycats.

Heres a fun mention of Veganism, on comedian Lewis Black, you might remember him from The Daily Show, the loud cranky guy who always screams at the camera, well, heres a clip from his latest album.

Its always great to hear Veganism mentioned by mainstream celebrities, although we cant all rely on Famous Vegan People to give us all baked potatoes. Rather than caring about which porn stars are Vegan, or which B grade celebrities would rather have a nude photo taken than wear so called "fur", only to put their skin shoes on, if we promote Veganism on its own merits, to everyone, then we get somewhere.

My "Grandmothers" Chocolate Mint Mud Cake

Chocolate Mint Mud Cake

"Eggless, no milk and on butter. Suitable for vegetarians and Vegans. Stays super moist for ages. No eggs or dairy means longer shelf life. Very cheap and simple to make"

1 and 1/2 cup self raising flour (sifted)
1/3 cup pams cocoa powder (sifted)
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
1 cup sugar
1/2 cup veg/rice bran oil
1 cup cold water
1/3 rd tsp peppermint essence
2 tsp vinegar

Method

Preheat oven to 190 C. Mix all dry ingredients into a large mixing bowl. Mix wet ingredients in a separate bowl (except vinegar). Pour wet into dry and gently mix. Add vinegar and stir to blend. Pour into 240 x 170mm loaf tin and bake for 45 minutes. Cool slightly, remove from tin with baking paper and cut into 8 squares when cold. Optional - drizzle with melted dark chocolate.

I enjoyed it most with So Good Vanilla Soy Ice Cream and Chinas finest "Budget" brand Peaches!

Project APE geocoins arrive, Invercargill, NZ

New geocoins (trackable metal coins) and "cachekinz" (a metal tracking tag in the shape of an animal) arrived from the USA today!

The "Project APE" caches were to promote the launch of the 2001 remake of "Planet of the Apes", it was a very good move for a large movie to align itself with a new hobby, geocaching, which had started the year before.

Inside the large ammo tins were props from the movie, as well as the usual log book etc.

This coin and cachekinz tag are made by the local Geocaching group, to celebrate the last Project APE cache remaining in the USA, with just one more left in Brazil.

Professional use of "Synthetics" for Uniforms

Having been hit with a TOTALLY ORIGINAL instant Vegan-killer, that made me realise the error of my ways, and immediately kill and eat my Chicken Friends,

I replied with how Vegans do not *have* to wear shoes made from flax, although we'd certainly "be allowed to", if we *wanted* to wear flax clothing :-)

Much of it is rather nice, and patriotic for New Zealanders!

I'm currently sporting the "blue" ensemble

Choice is a great thing. There is much choice for Vegan appropriate clothing, more than just the stereotypical "robes made from sack cloth, and bare feet" look :-)

I'd think we are often not taken seriously when we talk of "synthetic skin" clothing, as it may sound rather odd, to be trying to "rip off nature".

I myself do not like the idea of wearing clothing that looks like the skin of an animal. For shoes, I most often wear canvas, Chuck Taylors, or similar, which also have an advantage in being dirt cheap, where dirt= ~$15NZD per pair of size 13's amount.

***UPDATE the Invercargill Vegan Society put in a group order for very nice Etiko shoes, fairtrade, organic cotton and Vegan :-) Buying together, each pair came out to around $56 Lets support Etiko for being such a great company :-) ***

Why not mention professional uniforms that are turning away from the use of animal skin?

Hello and welcome to another episode of Coexisting With Nonhuman Animals

Recently theres been some kind of a video thing being recorded here in Invercargill New Zealand. I saw the crew constantly buying furniture from the family Antique and Secondhand store where I work. Its apparently a big deal. Heres a clip from one of the Australian stars, cant be that big a deal if an Australian gets near top billing, they recorded this podcast episode from a nearby radio studio. Notice how Homo Australis simplify their names, Hamish becomes "hame", Andy, which, you'd think was already simple enough, don't want to blow their minds with the whole "andrew", becomes, apparently, in Australia, "ando". They're a special lot, those Australians, their mothers love them.

Few rivalries go as deep as the Australio-New Zealandy war

*sigh*, no, we do NOT sound the same, "south-land", "dun-eden", they were trying to say South LIND, Dunedin, Invercargill!

Fair enough about the English guys comment, "like Chernobyl ", we may be a seemingly deserted area compared to the England, our Vegan Societies, and Associations seem to have memberships ranging from 1 up to a maximum of TWO members. We cant compete with Vegan Ireland, and other Animal Rights groups in the United Kingdom.

With my mind stuck in 1992, it would take too long to sufficiently mock Australia, its pretty difficult to think of material you know, "oh, if you like giant islands colonized by hardened convicts, sent by ship to the other side of the world to hopefully die in the scorching desert heat, who survived by evolving into the missing link, who now drive about crappy Holden V8's and drink VB, come to Aussie, bring the sheila, fair dinkum, struth, stone the crows. If you're called Bernard, we'll call ya Bazza, if you're called Sharon, ya now Shazza, Gary Francione would be Gazza Frazza… we have a big rock, a big bridge, and a big opera house that looks like its made from big sea shells, sorry cobber, I mean big sea shazzas"

Meanwhile, my lovely little city ALONE boasts that movie accurately based on our own son Burt Munro, starring Hannibal Lecter as a crackpot who pees on lemon trees and builds world record beating motorbikes, by himself, just like Richard Pearse, the New Zealander who singlehanded built and flew a plane of his own design in the middle of nowhere BEFORE those crappy WRONG brothers, who had a whole factory of bicycle makers helping. Pearse was a little further up the South Island, but we also boast a one man Vegan society, AND our Pak n Save supermarket can offer underground parking. Come to Invercargill, where dreams CAN come true! (small print disclaimer) as long as those dreams are about patting soft Chicken Friends and promoting Veganism with a secondhand USB microphone.

This episode, New Zealand "Animal Rights Groups" pimping Free Range

Well, promoting "Free Range" sure as heck isn't free, the Chickens enslaved are not free, and neither is the time or money spent by animal activists. Perhaps this "me and Bobby McGee" we keep hearing about are feeling good, all it takes is a harmonica, or a couple bells and whistles apparently, but nothing is being done for our Chicken Friends.

I know what made me feel good, hearing the soft peeps of day old Chickens, who'd just hatched underneath their mother Hen.

Sadly, Can-Tucky, whatever that is, has more than one export.

SAFE have now forgotten about the Pigs, after claiming victory about one particular type of cage used against Pigs, now they can go on about Chickens in cages for a while.

I like most, almost all animals. I have nothing against Pigs, I found it very sad to see the same old videos of them screaming and biting bars, covered in wounds over and over. But if theres one nonhuman animal species I'm particularly close to, it would be Chickens.

And Chickens make up the VAST majority of casualties, when it comes to so called "Animal Agriculture". Some 49 Billion of the 56 Billion animals we killed in 2007 were Chickens. Of all the animal we "use", that we kill, perhaps Cows and Chickens are the most loving, the most caring for their own families, for their friends. We abuse the workings of each species female bodies, of taking their eggs, of taking their milk, of taking their children, of taking their lives.

Seriously, of all animals we know, who cares for each other more than Birds? This is not something that can be argued, birds represent love, peace, community, and "tweeting" each other about what you think of the new Lady Gaga song, if it ripped off Madonna or not.

I'm not the only Vegan in Invercargill! PHOTO

There have been two instances in my life when I would have crashed a car, had I been driving. The first was while visiting Wellington, going past "Magnum Mac", and seeing a Power Mac G5, complete with 30 inch Apple Cinema Display...

I'd always just KNOWN I preferred Apple Computers... from growing up with green on black classics, to actually finding Mac OS ... err...6, 7, 8? more interesting on the ancient primary school computers, rather than the "newer" beige boxes running Windows 95.

But they were very rare in Invercargill! True, during the early 90's, we had an Apple store here, selling, I dunno, Performas or some crap? Until Sculley, Spindler, Amelio and co drove the company facedown into the ground. That's before The Second Coming of Steve of course.

High end Macs were rare. I thought I'd never see a G5, they were like Lamborghini's, and I certainly didn't live in LA.

I was excited when my primary school got iMac G3's...the principal got an iMac DV for himself, with black casing...and...coming with an Optical Pro Mouse... the first mouse I'd ever seen without those awful "balls", it was glossy black, and it lit up. I was in love!

I mean, the computers I used daily had mice with serial ports for crying out loud! They SCREWED IN to the big beige box!

So of course I was infatuated with this, you didn't have no crappy "mousepad", you had a BURNOUT pad!

Sure, the red glowing "eye" reminded you of HAL 9000, it made you feel like we really WERE living in the future! Exciting times :-)

So imagine how excited I was to see an actual Power Mac G5, in the aluminium, with dual 64 bit Central Processing Units... I thought I'd died and gone to lonely loser heaven!


Check out the price tag for the screen by itself...

The 30 inch screen ALONE cost $6539 NZD.... Thats barely under 5K USD in todays money, I'm sure things have changed since the heady days of 2005, pre iPhone for crying out loud!

I later bought a secondhand Power Mac G5 of my own, with dual 2.3Ghz CPU's, and, fittingly, a 23 inch ACD. It was marvellous, and to this day, it may be big, it was loud, it got very hot, it may be utterly outperformed by my i7 iMac... but THATS what a workstation SHOULD look like. Like how broadcasters use the same million year old metal grille microphones, or how shoes like the Chuck Taylor have remained almost unchanged over the decades, thats what REAL computers look like.

I've got my G5 hidden in its original box in my attic.

What other MIRACLE could have me equally excited, as if a lightning bolt had struck? Why, seeing a car bumper sticker, thats what!

I'm not the only Vegan living here!

And spotted on the SAME street I live on too!

To show what a loser I am, I went and said hello, and gave a couple of my Invercargill Vegan Society cards, along with one from the Auckland Abolitionist Vegan Association

Vegans were as rare as Power Mac G5's in Invercargill, now I've met another one living here :-) See, we're not all so lucky as to live in Auckland, where you can prance about handing out Vegan cupcakes with all your Vegan friends before going to a Vegan Restaurant :-) We dont leave Facebook messages like (well, certainly not "we" when there was only one of you...) "oh, I'm so full from eating Vegan cupcakes!...", no, we cry ourselves to sleep each night, with only The Bottle to console our hurt.

Another Vegan in Invercargill, I hope we can stay in touch! Maybe the "Invercargill Vegan Society" will soon have a second member? Or perhaps hearing of how I loved exotic computers, and USB mice will have made me un-friendable? Hopefully we'll soon see :-)

I found some Wild Ducklings while visiting my geocache tonight :-)

No match in loveliness for my Black Chicky Wick (I've been listening to the audiobook of A Clockwork Orange too often...), but very nice none the less!

Soon after I took this video on my phone, sorry about the quality, hard to move across the very wet ground and also not disturb the others, some young droogs scared them away.

At first I didnt do anything, there were two of them, and one of me, but as I stood up to go over there, they stopped.

Lets appreciate other animals, not try and scare them, when they are so trusting.

Oh, and "The Veganist", the world authority on Veganism believes that "singing Hens" produce ethical Eggs for our consumption, and that "small scale" raising and killing of Animals is a great thing!
